Lux Art Institute Announces Artists-in-Residence for Season 2010/2011

ENCINITAS, Calif. — (August 19, 2010) — Lux Art Institute, San Diego's first LEED certified interactive art destination, announced today the artists who will participate in Lux's 2010/2011 Season, which begins this September.

A significant contemporary art venue in San Diego County where visitors can "see art happen," Lux is one of the first museum facilities in the United States to establish an innovative artist-in-residence program that focuses on the living artist and the creative process.

"It's with great pride—and that I present the artists of the upcoming season at Lux—a complex task as we try to weave many elements into our final selection," said Lux Director Reesey Shaw. "As in years past, we have found amazing treasures—in both unsung young talents, as well as artists who have flown under the radar for many years. Their media is diverse—blown glass to hammered tin and copper to carved bass and lime wood, hailing from coastal California to the coast of Capetown. They are all masters of their trades and blowers of our minds. It's sure to be a season we will not soon forget, and I hope everyone will come share it with us!"

The 2010/2011 Artist-in-Residence Season includes:

Timothy Horn
In studio Sept. 9 – Oct. 9, 2010
On exhibit Sept. 9 – Oct. 30, 2010

Australian-born Timothy Horn begins the 2010/2011 Season at Lux with an exhibit of opulent sculptures fabricated from blown-glass, rubber, and rock sugar that challenge viewers to find the meeting point between the natural and constructed worlds. Inspired by decorative arts and engravings from European baroque and rococo, as well as by 19h century studies of organic forms such as lichen, coral and seaweed, Horn's work conveys fantasy and ornament underpinned by craftsmanship and concept.

His work has been featured in exhibitions at the de Young Museum in San Francisco, the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, the Museum of Arts & Design and at the Armory Art Show in New York, Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane, and the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra.

David Humphrey
In studio Nov. 18 – Dec. 4, 2010
On exhibit Nov. 18, 2010 – Jan. 1, 2011

New York City-based David Humphrey, a senior critic at Yale School of Art, will turn Lux's 2010/2011 Season on its head with paintings that employ landscape, figuration, iconography, exuberant colors and a cavalcade of kitsch images to provide a humorous and sometimes biting narrative of middle-class malaise. His first show was with the McKee Gallery in 1984, and he has since been exhibiting nationally and internationally. Humphrey's work is in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Walker Art Center, the Carnegie Institute, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, among others.

Alison Saar
In studio Feb. 3 – March 5, 2011
On exhibit Jan. 13 – March 16, 2011

Los Angeleno Alison Saar is an internationally acclaimed, African-American sculptor whose narrative, often life-sized works are poignant explorations of her personal and cultural identity. Sensual and buoyant with story, her carved figures and installations also address humanity in the broadest sense by delving into universal themes of family, fertility, human vulnerability and hope. Saar's work has been exhibited at prestigious venues across the country, including the Hirshorn Museum and Sculpture Garden at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the Santa Monica Museum of Art, the UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History, and the Studio Museum of Harlem, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum in New York.

Rick Stich
In studio March 25 – April 23, 2011
On exhibit March 25 – May 18, 2011

Santa Barbara painter and avid surfer Rick Stich finds his inspiration in the color and movement of water and in its interplay with light and landscape. His swirling brushstrokes and vivid hues convey not only the illusionist forms and patterns seen both above and below the water but also expose the inter-connectedness between the real and abstract in nature. Stich has had exhibitions at the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Carnegie Art Museum, Edward Cella Art & Architecture, L.A. Louver Gallery, and Ruth Shaffner Gallery. His paintings are held in numerous private and corporate collections, including Bank of America, Eli Broad Foundation, and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art.

Claudette Schreuders
In studio May 28 – June 18, 2011
On exhibit May 28 – July 30, 2011

Ending the 2010/2011 Season, South African sculptor Claudette Schreuders' carved and painted figures are powerful shamans alluding to a history of growing up under apartheid as a white, Afrikaans female. Fashioned from uncut timber, her thoughtfully rendered, figurative pieces reflect her love of storytelling and are vessels for emotions that reach beyond cultural boundaries. She has had solo and group shows at the Iziko South African National Gallery in Cape Town, the Contemporary Museum in Honolulu, the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University, the British Museum in London, the Austin Museum of Art in Texas, and at the Museum of Modern Art and the Museum for African Art, both in New York City.
