The Valise Project
Animal Tales
Jean Lowe

A giant papier-mache book by artist Jean Lowe opens to reveal a library of hand-crafted books with painted faux covers, and the titles that convey the varied and often conflicting relationships humans have with other species. From Peter Rabbit to Barbecue Basics, students will discuss the significance of each book in the Animal Tales volume and learn how art can tell an important story.

About the artist: Jean Lowe's painted, paper-mache installations comment on contemporary attitudes towards issues such as our treatment of other species and the environment. Lowe, a lecturer at UC San Diego, exhibits her work internationally and has been reviewed in such publications as Art Forum, Art in America, and The New York Times.
